F/Sgt John Conway Shearon

Born 8 March 1915, John lived near Bathgate in West Lothian before and after the war.  Before the war he was a shale miner, after he worked as a machine operator in the motor industry (presumably for British Leyland who had a massive plant there).  He married on 12 Dec 47 and his only child, Moira was born on 25 April 48 and John on 5 December 1956.

He volunteered for aircrew and enlisted on 8 September 1943, and was recommened for training as an air gunner.

21 September 1943 - Elementary Air Gunnery School

20 November 1943  - 12 Air unnery School

4 April 1944            - 17 Operational Training Unit.

Followinghis OTU traing and crewing up he went to 5 Lancaster Finishing School and from there on to 50 Squadron at RAF Skellingthorpe.

 

Whilst with 50 Squadron he flew 21 missions as the mid-upper gunner on the Cain crew Lancaster between Jan 7th and April 18th 1945.

He was mentioned as having engaged a JU88 nightfighter on 8/9 Feb (raid on Politz).

Following his tour with 50 Squadron he went to 8 School of Technical Traing and from there to a Heavy Bomber Unit in the mIddle East, returning to the Uk in 1 August 1946 and was demobbed 13 August 1946.

He died on 23 March 1968 of carcinoma of the lungs and left kidney.
