Lancaster PA223 VN-D

On the banks of the Marne-Rhine Canal a striking memorial stands in memory of those airmen killed in the loss of 50 Sqn Lancaster PA223 VN-D, which crashed close to this site on 03/02/45

The aircraft had departed Skellingthorpe at 1940 for Ops Karlsruhe.

The exact cause of the loss is unknown, but the aircraft exploded in mid-air and crashed 4km SE of Hochfelden. Six of the crew were killed, one evaded.
