A roadside plaque and information board remember those airmen killed in the loss of 61 Sqn Lancaster W5002 QR-L “The Pride of London” which crashed close to this site on 15/08/43

The aircraft had departed Syerston at 2020 for Ops Milan.

It was intercepted at 4000M, 3km SSW of Rugles by a Nightfighter captained by Lt Detlef Grossfuss (2/JG2) and shot down at 2320.

The aircraft crashed near Chartres. Six of the crew were killed - two of which have no known grave and are therefore commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey. One evaded.

Adjacent to the CWGC graves of their crewmates a plaque remembers the two crew members of 61 Sqn Lancaster W5002 QR-L “The Pride of London” who have no known grave
